I really wish they would send Sho to Ni-chome every other week. A girl can dream, I guess.

I am LOVING this book
Science is an inherent contradiction — systematic wonder — applied to the natural world. In its mundane form, the methodical instinct prevails and the result, an orderly procession of papers, advances the perimeter of knowledge, step by laborious step. Great scientific minds partake of that daily discipline and can also suspend it, yielding to the sheer love of allowing the mental engine to spin free. And then Einstein imagines himself riding a light beam, Kekule formulates the structure of benzene in a dream, and Fleming’s eye travels past the annoying mold on his glassware to the clear ring surrounding it — a lucid halo in a dish otherwise opaque with bacteria — and penicillin is born . Who knows how many scientific revolutions have been missed because their potential inaugurators disregarded the whimsical, the incidental, the inconvenient inside the laboratory?

It's books like this that make me want to savor every word of it.

Terra Formars: i.e. Oguri Shun & SMAP's Kusanagi have good taste in manga
I had such a blast marathoning 8 volumes of the manga within a single night.

Terra Formars: where bugs become really cool

I first heard Oguri Shun and Kusanagi Tsuyoshi mention this on SMAP x SMAP, read the first chapter and I got hooked! Let's see if my enthusiasm will continue... I've been looking for good Shonen Jump manga so this looks promising.
Synopsis:
With the space program attempting to travel to Mars, 21st century scientists were tasked with warming up the planet so that humans could survive on its surface. They came up with an efficient and cost effective plan of sending cockroaches and mold to the surface so that the mold would absorb the sunlight and the insect corpses would serve as a food source for the mold.
It is now the year 2577 and the first manned ship to Mars has landed on the planet and the six crew members are ready for their mission. But what they find are giant mutated humanoid cockroaches with incredible physical strength. The crew members are easily wiped out, but not before sending a transmission back to Earth. Now, humanity will send elite warriors to exterminate the mutated bugs and claim back Mars.

After all that fuss about Platinum Data...
I found Toma's No Otoko to be better.
Psychiatrist Washiya Mariko (Matsuyuki Yasuko) turned out to be the anchor of the film as she struggles to unravel the mystery that is the Brain Man, who goes by the name of Suzuki Ichiro. Implicated in a series of bombing cases, Suzuki (portrayed by Ikuta Toma) is identified as the main suspect by detective Chaya (portrayed by veteran actor Eguchi Yosuke).

It also doesn't hurt that the movie has some beautiful cinematography.

Why can't Arashi have a show like SMAP x SMAP?
I have yet to watch a single episode of Summer Nude (and I wasn't planning to).

Now I might be forced to watch it just to catch the in-jokes on SMAP x SMAP. And I think Nino rocked the Baka Tono better, although I think Goro is the better actor.

Cats! The Good, The Bad and the Ugly - A Photo Post
I got off my lazy ass to do some shooting around the neighborhood today. Initially I had wanted to do a collection of the stray cats in the neighborhood, but apparently animal control was more effective than I thought. I only managed to find 3, plus a few other older photos I took. Here goes nothing.

Found this odd-eyed cat in the last remaining village on mainland Singapore.

Nino, I can see why you held your celebrity crush for 13 years.

Yuko is ethereal.
And they even have the mole on the same side of their chins.

Dear Sho, thank you for bringing attention to the issue of women at the workplace.
I've been looking forward to this, because I think Sho empathizes with this issue a lot, given that he's grown up in a family with a working mother.

Firstly, he visits the Hello Work center for mothers in Yokohama and talks to the ladies there. As you can see, this particular Hello Work center caters to mothers with various facilities for children.

Sho discusses the difficulties of working mothers.

I liked this tweet which was aired during the program:
The responsibility of looking after a child lies with adults. It matters not whether they are male or female.

Potato, May 2013 – Aiba Masaki
This was a surprisingly thought provoking article despite its slice-of-life nature. Aiba is a very honest interviewee, which makes his thoughts delightful to read. There's also a nice dose of Sakuraiba and Nino-Ai in this.

Double posting because this statement on translation is SO TRUE.
For the people on my F-list who translate actively or do some sort of internal translation whenever you're watching a foreign show, here's what professional translators Ian MacDougall and David Nist had to say:
source: The Metropolis
Okay, I've got a plan because
nekobot01, my personal librarian, has recommended this lovely book, which I plan to devour this weekend. Good luck, me!
In translation, the destination language will always require more words than the source language
- This might be old news to professional translators, but this concept hit like a bolt of lightning when they said it. A society will naturally shape their language to make common topics efficient to communicate. So, when these words go into another language, they will require greater verbiage to fill in the context built into the source society’s language.
- An example of how this breaks down is a word like ‘Yoroshiku’. This one word in Japanese becomes oppressively dense in English: I will be kind to you and am requesting that you also be kind to me so we can interact successfully.
If you want to create media, ingest media
- Those planning to work in film need to watch heaps of films.
- Those planning to write, be it scripts or subtitles, need to be constantly reading.

I was about to make a ranty post about fandom, but then Arashi distracted me.
Seriously, these guys are magic.

I'll never get tired of watching this series. It's an "Arashi Grows Up" story and I loved how their rowing demonstrated their personalities. I was so moved that I even wrote a lengthy review here. MMA was such a great show, I hope to see it revived in some form in the future.
