TV Fan 2010 - Sakurai Sho interview
Dec. 24th, 2009 09:22 pm
You’ve been a news caster for NEWS ZERO for four years now.
There were so many things that I had to do. I often thought that I needed to go to the location in order to conduct the interview. In addition, I thought that it was an area of study which I wanted to further.
What has been the epitome of reporting?
It’s the opportunity to meet people that I normally don’t get to see, and to ask them questions. In addition, I also get feedback from them. It is at that moment where their words become food for thought to me. However, I don’t interview others for the sake of my personal growth. Rather, I do it for the sake of communicating certain information to the viewer, so I’m not too concerned whether I get to educate myself during the process. If I were to say how I have changed in my four years as a caster, it would be that people have begun to take notice of me. I can’t speak for myself, but if I had achieved bits of growth that would be good.
As a caster, what is an issue that has caught your eye at the moment?
I think that I would like to further my studies in agriculture. It’s another thing to be able to go do a report on it, but I’ve taken an interest in agricultural systems. Japan has a low self-sufficiency in food so I would [like to learn] about its agricultural systems.
The Vancouver Olympics are coming in February next year, would you like to continue your involvement in it like you did with the Peking Olympics?
I would like to do some sort of report on it. I’m not too sure whether I would be going in the capacity of a NEWS ZERO caster or some other position, but I most certainly welcome another involvement in the Olympics. Personally, the existence of the Olympics broadened during my coverage of the Peking Olympics. Therefore, I don’t see my involvement ending with the Peking Olympics, but to continue on from there. However, this is nothing but my passion so I really can’t help it.
On your 10th year anniversary concert, you were hung on a wire and flew through the air. Although you’re the altophobic Sakurai-san…
Although I was fearful during the rehearsals, it was unexpectedly alright during the actual concert. My tension goes up when the audience is there, so there was a little fear, but it’s not something which I can’t control.
You also floated in the air on the floating stage during the live broadcast of Odoroki no Arashi on 1st November.
For that experience, it was enjoyable. (laughs) I took joy in that from the viewpoint of an experiment.
You also had a 3D experiment during that live broadcast.
Although since we’re the ones performing, we had no feedback on that. (laughs) Although we ascertained that we did come out of the screen during the rehearsals, we had no feedback at all during the actual performance. However, we had a viewer’s poll during the live broadcast and there was a positive feedback, so I thought it was great that we accomplished a new challenge. I checked the video recording after the show and the 3D effect was greater than expected.
There were a lot of special programs during autumn as well, right?
I enjoyed every one of them. To be given the privilege to appear as a guest star is different, and the content varies too. I feel really blessed to be able to appear in a special program during this period. Nonetheless, we don’t get more excited because we’re appearing in a special program. We hope to present the usual Arashi, and if the viewers enjoy it, we feel great. Therefore, we don’t go into a special program thinking that this is special. Furthermore, the staff on the set has been the people we’ve always worked with.
The viewership ratings have been great too.
The numbers come as an afterthought to the actual performance. As performers, we only think about how to hype up the crowd and to make the show more enjoyable.
During this year, as part of your 10th year anniversary, you’ve taken more than your usual share of reporting.
I kept thinking, I don’t think the volume of work which I had to do changed all that much. (laughs) Even during our concert rehearsals, we rehashed our old videos in order to remember the choreography, but the way which our rehearsal room looks hasn’t changed much. At the same time, we were featured [in various media] and conducted various celebrations for our 10th year anniversary, so I felt grateful and happy to be able to look back at our past like that.
Your 10th year anniversary celebration festival will end with your concert in the Nagoya Dome.
Our 10th year anniversary concerts did not conclude in 2009 but in 2010, where our tour will end off. However, I think that it’s a precious place where we receive our energy to go into 2010 and our 11th year. It feels like the link between 2009 and our 10th year allows us to start afresh. To me, that is a big thing.
You’ve been involved in a lot of dramas, has that been an aspiration of yours?
Not at all. It’s just that at the very least I didn’t want to limit the genre of work which I did, so if various opportunities for different types of work came up, I want to take them on. It simply makes me glad to be able to be featured in dramas and movies. As I am surrounded by people with a common goal in mind, that passion-loaded filming set becomes a stimulus for me.
The zodiac sign for next year is the year of the tiger. Is there anything that comes to mind when you think of the “tiger”?
Hmm, I don’t have any acquaintances who are born in the year of the Tiger… Although I like Tigers… Each time Aiba-kun goes to different locales to film Shimura Doubutsu En, he’ll buy T-shirts with tiger prints on them for me. So I now have 3 to 4 shirts with tiger prints on them at home. I wonder why he keeps buying tiger prints… (laughs) (chats with Aiba who is next to him.) (Aiba: I mean, a Tiger T-shirt is the greatest proof that you’ve been to a zoo, isn’t it? Amongst all the animals!) I do wear it, but I’ve been told that the colour has run quite a bit! (laughs) Henceforth, I don’t really have the courage to wear it.
