Okay last part. This wasn't as tiring as translating AnS since they pretty much provide Japanese subs for every other line. Many gems in this episode. And Yama-chan has redeemed his image by being absolutely witty.
Leave a comment to tell us which was your favorite answer by our dear Aunts Agony!
Nakajima: Moving on, the person in 4th place is… Consultant Matsumoto!
Nino: Seriously?!
[Jun accepts his ranking with a look of graceful defeat.]
Jun: Argh this feels complicated.
Nakajima: [laughs] Complicated?
Jun: Yeah, it is. I mean, there’s six of us right? So that also means that I’m below average, yes?
Aiba: But that’s better than “Alright, former playboy!”
Matsujun’s answer: I think that Ishida-san is moving on to a new phase in life. How about if you capitalise on your life experiences so far and just enjoy your marriage? Firstly, I don’t think marriage is an impetus for you to change your entire self; furthermore, I think that the changed Ishida-san would command a new type of charm. Therefore, please go ahead and make Riko-san happy without being fearful of what might happen. I look forward to seeing the happy images of the both of you.
[Translator’s note: Jun looks rather disappointed. L Personally I felt that his answer was above average and reflected his thoughtfulness rather well, but I guess it didn’t go over well with Ishida-san. Too idealistic, I guess.]
Nakajima: This is good, isn’t it?
[Murmurs of agreement]
Ishida: I could cry while reading this, when he wrote, “I look forward to seeing the happy images of the both of you.” He could win with just this line.
Sho: Hang on, then why is he in 4th place?
Nino: What do you mean?
Ishida: Well, the ones above his were too good.
Everyone: Really??
Sho: Wait a minute, we still have the Worst Answer! Everyone hold your horses!
Nakajima: In 3rd place we have… Consultant Sakurai!
Nino: What a pity!
Matsushima: That’s surprising! The ones left now are the three people on top! [referring to Nino, Ohno and Yama-chan.]
Yama: This is SCARY!!!
Nakajima: Let’s listen to Sakurai’s reply.
I feel that everything is tied to the phrase “I don’t want to see Riko sad”. Ishida-san is an extremely gentle person, so whilst he has a strong tendency towards romance, I think he could also become a My Home Dad who showers plenty of love on his wife and children. With regards to work, I think that many new assignments related to My Home Dads will come in, so I think that there isn’t a need to worry. I wish you a married life where smiles abound and where Riko-san feels the happiest.
Yama: This is good!
Nakajima: How was it, Ishida-san?
Ishida: When I read the last sentence, I thought, this person is just great. That’s why, ah, I thought, he’s sure to be popular.
Sho: Third place is fine by me if I’m told that Ishida-san that I’m gonna be popular.
Nakajima: He is the master (of romancing the girls), right? Now that we’ve announced who came in 3rd, we have left the 1st and 2nd place, and also the Worst Answer.
Sho: It’s the three on the upper tier, yes?
[Yama-chan looks petrified.]
Nakajima: And the person who came in 2nd is… Consultant Yamazato!!!
Yama: ALRIGHT!!! YES!!! Your jeers can’t reach me!
Nino: You have GOT to be kidding me!
Yama: I’m the man whom the Master has deemed as 2nd place!
Jun: I lost to Yama-chan…
Yama: That’s right, Matsujun!
Nakajima: You’re pretty happy to be called 2nd, yes?
Yama: Of course! It’s Ishida-san who placed me second! And on top of that, my opponents were Arashi! I’m ranked above 4 members of Arashi! What should I do? Perhaps I should join Arashi, hmm?
[Translator’s note: Yama-chan is absolutely delirious with happiness. I can’t begrudge him his cute comment.]
Audience: EHHHH~~
Yama: Everyone, do you know what a joke is?
Here’s Yama-chan’s answer: The Ishida that Riko-san fell in love with was the Playboy Ishida, so you should keep your Playboy status. However, it’s not just any playboy, but a wholehearted playboy persona who loves a single woman wholeheartedly. I think that would be good. He may be popular, but everything tied up to the fact that “Riko is in his life.”
Jun: I see!
Ishida: I was hit hard by his first sentence. I could cry over what he said. But the punch lies in the phrase, “wholehearted playboy”. It sounds like he could be an author.
Yama: Could I appear under an anonymous name?
Nino: Well, well… He already said that you wrote like an author…
Nakajima: The remaining two are our Best and Worst…
Jun: By the way, Ishida-san, what’s the great part about the Best Answer?
Ishida: The 1st place… I guess it was the answer which I wanted to search for the most today.
Audience: EH~~
[Ohno has an extremely puzzled look on his face.]
Sho: So this guy really answered your question.
Nino: You can’t be serious…
Nakajima: Announcing the best answer… Which was the Best Answer that Ishida-san chose? And the Best Answer goes to… Consultant Ninomiya!!! [Nino does a little victory dance.]
Nino: That’s right, that’s right.
[Ohno almost falls over in his seat.]
Yama: [to Nino] You’ve been so confident since just now!
[Translator’s note: Oh my, I just noticed that Ohno has not spoken a single word since this segment started. O_O]
Nakajima: And with that, our Worst Answer goes to Riida.
Sho: Hang on, you mean it was worse than “Former Playboy”?
Jun: I’m interested to find out what he wrote.
Aiba: What on earth did Riida write?
Ohno: Eh? I…
Nakajima: Well then, we’ll read out the Best Answer now.
In any case, Ishida-san is an extremely gentle person, so he often is considerate of the people around him. This considerateness could be reserved for Riko-san only, or he could do what he has always done, and be considerate of all the people around him. Both ways are fine and good. But for me, a person who is loved by the one they love is the most attractive, so I thought to myself, perhaps that would be Ishida-san’s type of romance. I think the answer lies in what Ishida-san said, “I don’t want to see Riko sad.”
Nino: I’m really happy!
Nakajima: How did you find it, Ishida-san?
Ishida: I was shocked. When he said, “A person who is loved by the one they love is the most attractive, so I thought to myself, perhaps that would be Ishida-san’s type of romance,” that decisively clinched the deal. It resonated within my heart.
Nino: Thank you very much!
Nakajima: You must be very happy.
Nino: This segment is SUPER FUN.
[Translator’s note: Hands up for those people who love it when Nino says “Chouuu Tanoshii”!]
Ishida: It is a literary work of art. This is one of life’s answers.
Nino: Whoa! Thank you very much!
Nakajima: And moving on to the person sitting on the left, our fishing-lover Riida. Let’s hear his answer.
A person who truly possesses charm will retain his charm even after he gets married. Therefore, Ishida-san, why don’t you search for your new self and style?
Nino: That was short! That’s why it came in last!
Ishida: It looked quite rough and disjointed.
Jun: If you compared it to Nino’s, it does look very rough.
Nakajima: With regards to married life with Ishida-san, we’ve gotten a response from Riko-san.
Riko: While I’m nursing some worries about whether he’ll cheat in the next 5, 10 years to come, I don’t want to negate the feelings of happiness which I have now so in any case things will be alright. If his attention shifts to another woman, I think that it would be because my charm has faded, so I’ll work to retain my attractiveness. However, if he does cheat, I will not take it lying down.
Sho: That was filled with love, isn’t it?
Nino: That pretty much wraps it much, doesn’t it?
Yama: The heaviness of that last line!
Nakajima: Lastly, we’ve framed Consultant Ninomiya’s answer and presenting it as a gift for Ishida-san! If you will!
[The calligraphy reads: A person who is loved by the person he loves is the most attractive.]
Ishida: I’m really going to hang this in my house.
Nakajima: By all means, please take it home!
Some of my thoughts about this new corner:
I thought the language and words which each person used truly reflected their perspective on life and their insight into a particualr situation. "Alright, former playboy!" was the greatest verbal faux pas of the night, only to be superceded by the brevity of Riida's answer.
Poor Riida, it's not that he's slow or anything, but I feel that Ohno has his own style of doing things, so much so that he's not able to empathize with others very well. In his answer, his words showed what he would do in that situation, rather than what he thinks the guest should do.
Matsujun might have come across as being too idealistic in his representation and the guest might not have related to it as much. In every piece of advice given, there needs to be a certain level of identification and I noticed that answers which started off by identifying a characteristic of Ishida Jun'ichi tends to score higher. For example, Nino and Sho comment that Ishida is a gentle person while Yama-chan says that being a Playboy is not all that bad.
Sho-chan is prim and proper as always. Yama-chan surprised me the most because his last appearance of AnS was... not too impressive, if I must say. But Yama-chan in HnA was witty, held his own against the other Arashi members, and had a sense of self-deprecating humor which endeared him to the audience.
I must add though, that I don't necessarily agree with the Japanese view that a man hold on to his playboy status in order for a man to seem continually desirable. I was very tempted to replace the word playboy with "Casanova" because playboy had a rather negative connotation to it.
Of course, Nino phrases his comments succinctly and presented a new paradigm for the guest: the definition of attractiveness is to be loved by someone you love! That line was pure win, by the way. Which reminds me, Johnny-san, when are you going to let Nino have enough time to pen down more lyrics?
