I hope this segment continues next year because the pairings have really good chemistry! The Ohno-Matsuoka pair was a given but I’m surprised at how the Joushima-Matsumoto pair worked out as well.

Kokubun Taichi X Aiba Masaki – Cooking Men Combination
We bring you “Conversations about Men’s Meals” between Kokubun Taichi, who’s currently starring in a culinary program*, and Aiba Masaki, who’s hooked on cooking as a hobby.
Translator’s note: Taichi is a regular member of the culinary show, Guru Guru Ninety Nine.
Aiba: Does Taichi cook on a regular basis?
Kokubun: Only on TV shows, I guess?
Aiba: But you cook a fair bit of various cuisines, right? Wouldn’t it be good if you started doing it on a regular basis?Kokubun: No, no. I’m fine with being a specialist at eating. It’s come to a point where I’m called an “Eating Genius” on the show. (laughs) Does Aiba cook?
Aiba: Sure I do. To the point whereby I even cook beef bowl from early on in the morning. Kokubun: Seriously? That’s amazing!
Aiba: Originally, it was a choice between eating a bento [packed lunch] or having a meal outside. Recently, I’ve become conscious of my salt intake. Normally, when I have the time, I’ve come to make my own meals. Kokubun: Oh, that’s praiseworthy.
Aiba: I’ve also looked at Kentaro’s recipe book* and made some dishes. Translator’s note: Kentaro here refers to Kobayashi Kentaro the culinary expert. Incidentally, Kentaro has co-authored a book with Taichi entitled, Danshi Gohan. [lit: A Man’s Meal]
Kokubun: You’re kidding!? What did you cook?
Kokubun: Speaking of fried rice, when I appeared on “Arashi ni Shiyagare”, I made fried rice. That was a recipe which was taught to me by Kentaro-san.
Aiba: If your teacher was Kentaro-san, people like us are totally no match for you! (laughs)Kokubun: Hahaha! Come to think of it, you introduced your favorite yakiniku joint to me, yes?
Aiba: I’ve also gone to Taichi-san’s recommended yakiniku restaurant. After that, we went to play billiards and stuff. Then you started to talk to strangers and that made for a terrible memory. Kokubun: Hahaha! Now that you mention it, the two of us haven’t gone out lately.
Aiba: Yeah, please invite me~!Kokubun: Shall we go then. It’s winter, so how about a delicious hotpot? Sweating while eating Jjigae [Korea stew] is the best thing ever. I like to add instant ramen at the end. The feeling of junk food is pretty awesome.
Aiba: I love that too!Kokubun: Well, in the end, as long as it tastes great, a man’s meal can consist of junk food or whatever. And then top it off with some alcohol! (laughs)
Joushima Shigeru X Matsumoto Jun – Surprise!? Indoor type Combination
The common point between the two is… an unexpected “Indoor type”.
Matsumoto: Joushima’s private life is a mystery to me, so there’s lots of questions I would like to ask.
Joushima: Well, ask anything!
Matsumoto: Hmmm, do you watch movies?Joushima: Well, I don’t go to movie theatres. I pretty much watch DVDs at home.
Matsumoto: What DVDs have you been watching lately?Joushima: Hmmm, what would that be… TOKIO’s Live Concert DVD.
Matsumoto: Was that to check on it?Joushima: That’s right. I’m looking at the balance of the music and such. Well, it’s my job. On the other hand, what does Matsujun do?
Matsumoto: I go drinking with friends or watch stage plays. Joushima: Oh~ I thought you would be more active and do sports and such.
Matsumoto: I’m rather an indoor type. Joushima: That’s the same as me! Most of the time, I drink with my friends in the neighborhood, and then drink at home.
Matsumoto: Ah, do you go with the people from Johnny’s?Joushima: No, no~ I mean, I don’t know anyone’s mail address. The ones I do know are those of my fellow members.
Matsumoto: Eh~ Do the members of TOKIO text each other?Joushima: Yes, but it’s about work. How about Arashi?
Matsumoto: We do~ Recently, Sho-kun sent me a mail about how interesting Aiba-kun’s photo was. [It was a picture of him from Tensai Shimura Doubutsuen.] (laughs) Please bring me drinking next time!Joushima: Sure thing ~ Where shall we go?
Matsumoto: If I could come then anywhere’s fine, really. I would like to listen to you at a slow and measured pace at a bar or something.Yamaguchi Tatsuya X Sakurai Sho – Somehow, a Near Miss Combination
The duo which has many points in common, but no point of interaction.
Yamaguchi: I’ve worked with Arashi quite a fair bit, but somehow I’ve never gotten a chance to interact with Sakurai. For Aiba, we were together on “Shimura Doubutsuen”, and for Ohno-kun, it was “Kaibutsu-kun”, right? I’ve gone for meals with Matsujun and Ninomiya. The only person I don’t know is Sakurai.
Sakurai: “You don’t know”… (laughs) I’ve had the privilege of meeting you during a recording of yours.
Yamaguchi: That’s right. We both have recordings for Mondays, yes? And we also got excited talking about how our birthdays were on the same month just a little while ago. Next year, I will turn 40 exactly, while Sakurai will turn exactly 30 years old.
Sakurai: That’s right, that’s right!Yamaguchi: And there’s another common point between the both of us, which is the fact that we both appear on live broadcasts.
Sakurai: That’s true. I was told this by Joushima-kun just now. He said that live broadcasts end at a fixed time, so it’s nice that the two of us can accurately predict the time. Yamaguchi: Well, that’s one aspect of it. (laughs)
Sakurai: At a glance, it seems like we have a lot in common when in actual fact, we’re a pair that consists only of vague near misses. (laughs) Next time, please invite me to the sea or something~!Yamaguchi: Are you saying this for real? You look like the type who would be reading the news at home while I’m doing outdoor activities.
Sakurai: Well, you’re not wrong about that. (laughs) Yamaguchi: You had your debut event at Hawaii, right? Let’s go to Hawaii then.
Sakurai: I haven’t been to Hawaii much… Yamaguchi: Then let’s go eat nonsensical Japanese food. Like Spam Sushi or Sushi Roll. I like stuff like that.
Sakurai: I get what you mean. Novel types of sushi, right? By all means, when the opportunity arises!Nagase Tomoya X Ninomiya Kazunari – The Unrivalled Music Lovers Combination
The duo which unconsciously becomes maniacal once they talk about music!
Ninomiya: Pretty much at home. When inspiration hits, I’ll write it.
Nagase: And how do you write your music?
Ninomiya: I use a music composition software. Nagase: Me too. Which sounds do you input into the software first?
Ninomiya: The drums, I guess? First, I put in the bass (on-beats) and the snare drums (off-beats)…Nagase: Uh huh. And then you input the bass and keyboard, and sing the song… It seems like this topic may veer into pretty maniacal terrain. (laughs)
Ninomiya: True. (laughs) I’m worried that the readers may not be able to follow, so let’s change the topic. Shall we talk about the songs which we like from each other’s group?Nagase: For me~ Hmmm… “Monster” is nice. I think it’s good that Arashi’s songs bring out the Arashi factor properly.
Ninomiya: That makes me happy. For me, it would be “AMBITIOUS JAPAN”. That’s good~ Good!Nagase: Nothing besides “good”?
Ninomiya: No, no. That is because it would be presumptuous of me to evaluate the song. Nagase: Dahaha. By the way, if the two of us were to compose a song together, what kind of song would it be?
Ninomiya: A love song?Nagase: Sounds good~ Then the opening will go like this, “Kill You”.
Ninomiya: Eh!? (laughs)Nagase: And we’ll finish off with “I Love You”. That’s it~
Ninomiya: So it’s a slightly warped expression of love. Nagase: That’s right, that’s right. This is a song about being crazily in love. (laughs)
Matsuoka Masahiro X Ohno Satoshi – The Superhuman Power Combination
A dialogue between the superheroes EIJI and Kaibutsu-kun!
Ohno: Although I used various superpowers in my role in “Kaibutsu-kun”, Matsu-nii also used superpowers in Psychometrer EIJI, right?
Matsuoka: The tough part about dramas with superpowers has got to be the visual effects. We handle it using CG now, but for me 14 years ago, everything was analogue so it was really tough. Or perhaps I should say that last time, it was terrible when I was filming for the Saturday 9PM drama slot. (laughs) It’s like, “I’m not gonna let you sleep!”
Ohno: Eh! There’s nothing like that nowadays. Matsuoka: Right? Nowadays things are done properly. So what were the reactions from people around you after filming “Kaibutsu-kun”?
Ohno: Simply put, I came to be called “Kaibutsu-kun” more often than “Ohno-kun”, I guess. Matsu-nii, did anyone tell you to show them your superpowers?Matsuoka: if anyone said that to me, I’d send them flying. (laughs)
Ohno: [bursts out laughing]Matsuoka: Well, if you were to talk about a special ability of mine, Ohno has it too. It’s the ability to not be a celebrity. (laughs) There’s no guy that can be that ordinary. That’s my special ability.
Ohno: I don’t understand it myself… What I feel from Matsu-nii is an engulfing power, I guess. When we’re together, I feel at peace and it seems like we can always stay together.* I mean, more than a celebrity, Matsu-nii feels like “Matsuoka Masahiro”. (laughs) There’s no element of an idol in there. (laughs)Translator’s comment: I have no idea how to phrase this so that it sounds less weird. >_<
Matsuoka: Nope. I told Johnny-san that I didn’t like that.
So readers, which was your favorite senior-junior pairing?
