Scene 5: Ohno defends his client using the exact same words which acquitted Toma of knifing his brother many years ago.

“That is the truth. As you have heard [from the voice recording], the person who first held the knife in his hand was Kumada.”

Toma wonders out loud why a voice recording was made at the scene of the crime.

Toma’s colleague rushes into the interrogation room with letters in red envelopes gathered from the defendant’s apartment. Ohno watches silently and with a meticulous eye as Toma hastily examines the letters, as if anticipating some kind of response.

Toma realizes that a third party had been manipulating Hayashi and Kumada, and demands that Hayashi reveal the identity of Amano Makoto.

Hayashi: I don’t know who Amano is. However, I’m grateful to him. I wanted to kill Kumada. If I hadn’t read this letter, I would have harbored bitter regret for the rest of my life.”

Toma: What the hell are you thinking about, saying that you wanted to kill someone?!!”

Ohno: Serizawa-san, please calm yourself down.

Toma: Could I possibly keep calm?!! An innocent man has been murdered. Kumada-san has a beloved wife and son! How could you possibly understand the feelings of a person who has had someone important taken away from them?!!

Ohno: [remains silent before looking up at Toma] That is not only limited to Kumada-san. Be it guilty or innocent, rich or poor, a single person is precious to someone else. That includes you and me.
