I'm going have to stop taking on projects since I always seem to get distracted by some other article... The people at TV Fan magazine sat down with the members of Arashi for their individual interviews.
Since you turned 29 on 26th November, what would you like to do in your last year of being a twenty-something?
I guess I want to work on the art piece I’m drawing now? Basically, I have nothing in particular which I want to do. It has been completed.
Are there times when you thought you aged, or when you thought that you were still young?
I’ve never thought of myself as being old. I mean, I’ve not even lived half my life! (laughs) Recently, I thought that I was still young. I’m still physically fit and all. On the emotional side, I feel youthful too. Although when I was in my teens, being a 30-something felt old to me, now that I look at it, I don’t really feel that way anymore.
You did a copious amount of fishing in 2009. What was your biggest catch?
I went quite frequently this year. Rather than catching the biggest fish, I was able to do all sorts of fishing, like at different provinces. Although I didn’t catch it, an acquaintance of mine managed to catch a blue-fin tuna. When I saw what he did, I was so excited.
Did you also want to catch a blue-fin tuna?
I was happy just to be able to see it. I could eat it too. It tasted great! That was the first time in my life I ever had sashimi like that.
What was the longest time you ever spent on a boat this year?
25 hours. That was tiring… Shige from NEWS (Kato Shigeaki) went with me, but it was his first time fishing. For 25 hours. (laughs) During the trip, he went on the boat, although he fell asleep. Shige seemed to go for many fishing trips after that, so it seems like he’s taken a liking to fishing too.
You had so many amazing events and projects which you took on this year, but which one left the greatest impression on you?
We had the privilege of attending many events, so I wonder which one it was… But I guess it happened recently. Since we were welcoming our 10th year anniversary, we often had photos of ourselves from 10 years back on the set. As I looked at those photos, I really thought to myself, “Ah, it’s been ten years already!”
Has there been anyone who left an indelible impression on you this year?
Nara-san, I guess? The artist, Nara Yoshitomi-san. I was given the chance to talk to him, and that was an unforgettable experience. It was my first time talking to an artist like that. It was such a stimulus for me, I decided to focus on my art next year! (laughs)
During the New Year’s Eve from 1999 into 2000, you were in Sydney doing a 5km run to welcome the New Year. Then you immediately flew to Honolulu and ran another 5km to welcome the New Year a second time. It’s been ten years since you had a New Year run like that, so do you remember anything from that experience?
I remember thinking to myself, “Why do I have to run?” I was only thinking of that all the time. And stuff like, “What should I do next?” At that time, that was how things were. I just did what I was told.
And if the five of you were to run now?
No way, I don’t feel like running anymore. I hate it, I hate it! It’s impossible. I think I’ll be the first to retire!
Is there something which you enjoy every year during the year end music programs?
We’re given the privilege to appear in various music programs every year. It has somehow become a custom for us, so I’m really happy and grateful. On top of that, I also look forward to Johnny’s Countdown. I think that because the JE Countdown is there, it wraps up the entire year. I like that I can say, “Ah, with this, the year has finally ended.”
Arashi has been the emcees for 2007 and 2008, yes?
That’s because I’m not the one in charge. (laughs) I look forward to meeting the other groups in JE. Honestly, if the countdown didn’t exist, there would be people that I wouldn’t meet in an entire year.
This year, only Kanjani 8 has been in Osaka.
Eh, really?
The last time I talked to Yokoyama Yu-san from Kanjani 8, he said to me, “Ohno-kun puts on a face which says he can’t do anything but ends up doing amazing stuff.” As you look back on this year, what was the one moment which you stepped up the game and gave it your best shot?
This year… I wonder what it was? I don’t think that was anything like that~
How about when you appeared in Uta no Oniisan, The Resident of Room 0, and released a single under your name? Was it busy for you then?
I see. I was busy then, but I also enjoyed myself.
The five of you acted together on the My Girl PV, which is something that you haven’t done for a while.
We did our scenes bit by bit, so it didn’t really feel like we were acting.
As you reflected during Arashi’s 10th year anniversary, what did you think about anew about your own life?
I’ve been so blessed, it’s scary. It’s not a decade which comes to anyone and everyone. I’ve been thinking lately, “Why me?” Really, I’ve been dwelling on it in particular. As we welcomed our 10th year, everyone congratulated us… I’ve been so blessed, it’s scary. Although many things have happened, it’s been a mystery and there’s nothing I could do about it. I can’t help but think that it’s a wonder that I turned out the way I am now.
Can you imagine what your life will be like from now on?
I can’t. Personally, I think there are areas in my life where I’m fine with anything that happens. (laughs)
As you look back at 2009, was there anything which you wanted to hear from the fans?
From the fans? (Ninomiya whispers into his ear.) What do you think of me? What do you think of what I’m doing now? And of course, are you affected by my tan? (laughs)
You’re pretty much concerned about those type of comments?
I mean, the fans made a face when it came to the tan.
So you’ll take care not to get a tan?
I thought about it recently. It’s caused trouble for some people. [Chuckles]
You don’t look so tanned to me.
That’s right~! (looks really pleased with himself)
You’ve not been fishing lately?
Well, that’s true. However, I’m going the day after tomorrow. (chuckles)
