Letters to Arashi - ANAN July 09

Ohno writes individual letters to the other four members of Arashi. I'm surprised at the emergence of a thoughtful Riida.

Riida’s message to Jun: I want to see the cool Matsujun sulk.

 

When I first met Matsujun, he was still a growing kid so he was small then. On top of that, he used keigo with me and was just so shy. [Translator’s note: keigo is honorifics, or to speak in an extremely polite manner to one’s superior or sempai.] Well, before I knew it, his manner of speaking to me became totally casual. There was once, long ago, where we played rivaling roles in a stageplay. I still remember how the two of us used to glare at each other 5 minutes before the actual show on the sides of the stage so that we could boost our emotions. Although we were serious about it back then, if we were to do it now we would definitely burst out laughing. Although Matsujun looks cool at first glance, he’s gentle and notices the little things. After he breaks his chopsticks, he precisely rubs them against each other [to smoothen it out]. When girls see his magnificent handiwork, they’ll definitely fall in love with him! If I had some time off, I would definitely take Matsujun to a park and play some badminton. And I would like to see his sulky face as he complains, “This is sooo troublesome!” (laughs) However, somehow or another, he’ll play it with me with a smile on his face. That’s the way Matsujun is.

 

Riida’s message to Sho-kun: The gap is what makes up Sho-kun’s charm

 

There were many times where Sho-kun and I saw each other in private. And that happened coincidentally too! I was so surprised when I abruptly met Sho-kun amongst the tens of thousands of people at the Tenjin Festival in Osaka. Could our wavelengths be similar? When his longtime dream of becoming a news caster was finally realized, I was so happy for him. I watch Sho-kun read the news on T every time. Because it’s something which I cannot do, I still think that it’s amazing of him, even to this day. (laughs) But his fail! personality in variety programs… What is up with that gap?!  But that’s typical of Sho-kun, so please stay that way. I like Sho-kun’s drawings too. If I were a girl, no doubt about it, I would fall in love with that part of him. I mean, you could laugh till your ribs hurt* each time you see his pictures. Previously, due to a proposal from a magazine, Sho-kun and I went fishing together. We did say that we would go again in private, right? I’ve not forgotten our promise!

 

Translator’s note: Ohno actually says to laugh from the bottom of your stomach, but I find laughing till your ribs hurt to be more fluid in English.

 

Riida’s message to Aiba-chan: Our relationship is a mysterious one where we feel good even without having to talk.

 

During our debut, as we travelled to different places and stayed at different hotels, I’ve always roomed with Aiba-chan. Even when we have up to 10 hours of spare time, we would roll about in our beds and watch TV together wordlessly. You know for Aiba-chan, even when you’re not speaking to him you mysteriously feel good. You would expect Aiba-chan to cause the laughs of any variety show we’re on. Moreover, for that to remain the same after 10 years is really amazing. And the fact that he’s a hard worker who always stays till the very last whenever we have dance practices. I know that too. I just want to say for now, “Please don’t overdo it.” That being said, we went to a tasteful bar 4-5 years back in Ginza. Even till now, I had no idea why we went to a hangout for adults like the Ginza. Moreover, I didn’t pay the bill and left. (laughs) Shall we go to a bar again? This time I’ll pay my bill properly.

Riida’s message to Nino: I’m fascinated by your magic!

 

I have no words to describe Nino’s charm, other than the word, “Everything”. If I had to apply a catchphrase [to Nino] it would be “The Almighty Man!” In particular, I have nothing but admiration for his advances in magic. That’s because everyone forgets about solving the magic trick and is just mesmerized by the deftness of Nino’s hands. (laughs) The greatest memory I have with Nino is (no surprises there) Ohmiya SK, I guess. We were so brilliant then… But my passion for the reunion of Ohmiya SK hasn’t changed one bit! What if we had some time off? That’s it, I’ll invite Nino to some trendy department store. I’m extremely interested in what the “Almighty Man” will buy. And this is something that happens once in a while, I have times when I think that I don’t want to lose to Nino. For example, if Nino were to go for a date at Roppongi Hills, I would go to the newer Mid Town. And stuff like that. (laughs) I wonder why that is?
