It’s been said that hindsight is 20/20 because you see things clearly in retrospect. How do the members react when they read their first impressions of each other in a 1999 article?
This is a pretty old article I managed to dig up, but the Round Table talk is particularly hilarious. The Arashi members read out what they said about each other in Wink Up when they first debuted. Now that they have ten years of love, fail! and friendship between them, how have their impressions changed?
Sho: [bursts out laughing after glancing through a magazine article from their debut days] Hahahaha!
Jun: Hmm? What’s up?
Sho: This is Ohno’s impression of Nino. He said, “When he pretended to kiss me just now, I fought back, which caused him to run for his life immediately. What a wimp!” What do you make of it? (laughs)
All five: [Bursts out laughing]
Sho: Do you feel like you have matured, Ninomiya-kun?
Nino: I definitely have!
Aiba: He sure did!
Sho: I’ve never seen him run away since. There was a kissing scene that was insistently put into the Hero performance in one of our live DVDs.
Ohno: We’ve kissed, yeah?
Nino: Yeah, it’s nothing special.
Everyone: [Bursts out laughing]
Nino: This is good stuff too. Here’s Aiba-kun’s impression of Sho. He said, “[Sho] is an unchanging person, but then and now. He’s able to separate work and pleasure precisely, and a really lively person. Although he’s the mediator within the group, he’s not particularly strict. He’s a reliable person who’s really great.”
Aiba: You know, this is… The truth is, I didn’t really Sho-chan back in our Junior days. (laughs)
Sho: That’s true. Why you… I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t know me enough to be able to say 4 sentences about me!
Aiba: Yeah! (laughs) Why did I talk so much? Riida didn’t know [Sho-chan] that well back then too…
Nino: But Riida said the same thing as you did. “Sho-kun hasn’t changed since way back when.” He says this even though he doesn’t really know Sho-chan!
Everyone: [Bursts out laughing]
Nino: This was Ohno’s impression of Sakurai: “I’ve not seen anyone get angry at him once I think…” What do you guys think about this one?
Sho: What do you guys think? Has anyone ever gotten angry at me for the past 9 years?
Ohno: Not at all. Not even once.
Sho: So cool! Said like a true Zen master! This was said about Nino: “I look forward to having talks with him. But when he gets on television, he becomes a rather dull person straight away.”
Nino: Who the heck said that?!
Jun: That was Sho-kun! (laughs) [reads from the article] This is Sho’s impression of Nino: He’s normally a passionate person, but when he appears on TV, he suddenly turns becomes rather dull.
Sho: You know, don’t you think that my comments as a whole sounded rather scripted? Like a comic story? My comment about Matsujun was pretty amazing too: “Matsujun looks like he’s on his way to becoming an icon!”
Everyone: [Bursts out laughing]
Nino: Are you a producer?
Sho: Who’s this person?
Aiba: He’s so funny!
Sho: I’ll script everything! Well, this is interesting. But the general framework hasn’t changed, yes?
Aiba: I don’t think it’ll change that much.
Nino: It’s been 9 years still.
Ohno: But you know, to have said these things just a month after we debuted.
Jun: It’s to be expected I guess, since we were always together during that period.
Sho: Yeah, when we were 18 or 19.
Jun: We were together every day. For about 2 months.
Aiba: But I don’t really remember what happened in Hawaii.
Sho: Really? I have quite a few memories of Hawaii.
Jun: I didn’t have much memories of Hawaii too.
Aiba: But the cruiser on which we made our first appearance left a deep impact on me.
[It seemed like they appeared while bearing the banner of Arashi. Matsujun looked like he was about to fly away with the wind.]
Jun: The flag weighed a tonne.
Sho: It was really blown about by the wind, wasn’t it?
Jun: The wind could have blown me off my feet!
Aiba: And I could clearly remember how all the reporters had this incredulous look when they saw us. (laughs)
Jun: I so remember that happening. (laughs)
Nino: That image pretty much remained in my mind. They had faces which said, “Who the heck are these people?!”
Sho: I just couldn’t forget those faces.
Everyone: [Bursts out laughing]
[Wow, everyone looks really young in their debut photos.]
Sho: Say, why don’t you read what’s written in that caption over there? “History is about to be written here!”
Aiba & Nino & Ohno: Ooooh, cooooool.
Jun: Well, it’s true that our history was written from that point onwards. (laughs)
Sho: That’s also because we wore the historic transparent constumes and appeared on Music Station two weeks after that! (laughs)
Nino: That was a milestone for us, those transparent costumes…
Everyone: [Bursts out laughing]
Jun: [looks at the article again] This is Aiba’s impression of Ohno: Although he’s not really the type to let loose of himself, he’s really funny. That’s why I think that he will pioneer a new genre of comedy.
Sho: A genre of comedy? (laughs)
Nino: Even though he’s supposed to be an idol…?
Aiba: Ah, did I? You mean I said that?
Nino: Well pioneer all you want, but please do so as an idol!
Jun: Hey listen to this too. This is Nino’s impression of Ohno: “I didn’t think he was all that cheery. We often walk while holding hands.” Say, you guys started holding hands here, right?
Sho: Gross~! (laughs) However, you could tell just by reading this article that Nino had a lot going on with Ohno-kun here. The foundation for Ohmiya SK was laid here, right?
Nino: Ahh, that’s right!
Jun: It happened right when we debuted.
Sho: Ohmiya was formed in Hawaii.
Ohno: We pretty much developed from there, didn’t we?
Everyone: [Bursts out laughing]
Sho: Say you guys, here’s Ohno-kun’s impression of Matsujun: “Although he was grinning a short while ago he became angry suddenly. And it was over such a trivial matter too. (laughs)” This is true even now, right? And he gets angry all by himself too. (laughs)
Nino: Yeah, it happens in an instant.
Jun: That’s right. I haven’t changed at all. (laughs)
Ohno: Not one bit. Truly. Even though he’s by himself, he can get all angry by himself.
Sho: And that’s not to the detriment of the people around him, right?
Nino: Yup. Not at all.
Ohno: It’s like he’s angry at himself. (laughs)
Aiba: That happened recently too. He got pissed off when he was playing games. (laughs)
Everyone: [Bursts out laughing]
Sho: How about this? “Aiba-chan is like a big brother to me.” This was mentioned by Ohno-kun, who happens to be 2 years older. (laughs)
Aiba: Riida is so cute, yes? (laughs)
Nino: Is that true even now?
Ohno: Well~ He is like a big bro. Hmm, maybe we’ve become the same age now.
Sho: How did that feel?
Ohno: I wonder… Oh yes, in the beginning when we all sat in the same vehicle. I remembered that Aiba-chan always sat next to me, so I talked to him often. And we were almost always standing next to each other during interviews.
Aiba: I was next to you. And that also applies to our seats in the plane too, right? Even now.
Nino: Isn’t it because our positions are arranged according to the alphabet? [Translator’s note: In the Japanese alphabet, A-I-U-E-O appear first. SA, NI, MA are the next few letters.]
Ohno: And we roomed together when we stayed in hotels.
Nino: And that’s where you thought, “Whoa, this person is such a great guy!”
Ohno: That’s what I thought! (laughs)
It’s been quite interesting to have you guys look back at your old articles. (laughs) Even though we could go on from here, we’d like to end off on this high note. Please favour on from now on!
