The people at Wink Up magazine sit down with the members of Arashi to talk about their new album and recent happenings.

 

What do you think the fans like about Arashi?

 

Well… I’m guessing that it’s our looks. (laughs) I mean, you come to like someone [by liking] their looks first, right? Honestly speaking, the only thing that came to my mind was our looks… I wonder what it could be? That’s what I would like to find out too! (laughs) But you know, it has to be how we’re all on good terms, isn’t it? The members of Arashi. We’re the literary type, right? (as opposed to being the physical type)

 

[The topic shifts to the recent results on Ranking Derby] As for why I’m not popular with the Yankees, it has to be because I’m too cool, right? (laughs) Speaking of which, I’m always in either 1^st or 5^th place in that segment. I can understand why the Yankees ranked me in 5^th place… Even though I understand that, I can’t help but to continue to aim for 1^st place! That’s why, you see, that segment is really tiring. (laughs)

 

Tell us about “Boku no Miteiru Fuukei”.

 

It’s a masterpiece after 2 years and 4 months. (laughs) Somehow it’s an album which is really well balanced. We did what we had to do and what we wanted to try out… From the perspective of a singer, we went into it without any stress at all. Of course there were solo songs as well. As for the title… I can’t blurt it out here. (laughs) I composed the melody and wrote the lyrics. Well, I did the arrangement on it as well. (laughs) I thought I managed to put it together rather well. This time, àPia-no-jaCß-san played the piano for me, and it’s definitely great when you have someone whom you like play the piano [for the song]. That raises my spirit, you know. The recording session was so enjoyable~ It made me want to play the piano. I wanted to play the piano during a live performance as well. Although I won’t be… (laughs) I passed on that opportunity for this tour. That’s why I’ll be dancing. I intend to dance to this solo.

 

Forgive this sudden question, but please tell us an interesting story which happened recently!

 

Yesterday I went drinking with Ayano Tsuyoshi. [Note: A cast member of Gantz] He said to me, “C’mon Nino, tell me an interesting story!” An amazing number of people have been asking me to tell them interesting stories. As for the interesting story… I don’t really have one. (laughs) Ah, you see, when I returned to my parent’s house the other day, the interior of the house was ENTIRELY white! Just as I was thinking, “What on earth was happening?!”, I was told that my sister had returned home and was doing bizarre things in the house. She painted the house white in colour, and asked whether she could grow a lawn in the corridor… That was when it struck me. My sister is really interesting! (laughs) That’s why, I hope that she gets married. By all means, I hope she becomes a bride. As a younger brother, that’s what I think. I guess that falls along the lines of an interesting story which happened recently… (laughs)

 

Tell us about the tour.

 

The tour is the same as the album in the sense that we did what we had to do and what we wanted to do. I don’t know how it will turn out, but the album has lots of cool tunes. That’s why there isn’t a thing about the concert which we don’t like; on the other hand it feels like we could create parts of the concert which make the audience breathe a sigh of relief. The president [Johnny Kitagawa] often tells us, “Your fans can’t be eating meat every time!” (laughs) [Note: Johnny means to say that Arashi can’t expect their fans to always enjoy the same thing.] I feel that we should give some thought about the balance in that area. This time round, the boss [meaning Matsujun] is acting in a drama… In that sense, the audience might come to accept a different image of [Arashi]. It just so happens that [Matsujun] has an idea (about the concert’s conception and production) right now… If we could put that into action it would be great, it’s something worth looking forward to.
