With Kagiheya, my personal catharsis came in the form of crossover fanfiction; but for the current season of Last Hope, I though it'd be more appropriate to do a character analysis. You'll find commentaries and parts of Dr. Takumi's dialogue here, so don't say I didn't warn you about SPOILERS.

lasthope

Takumi’s role as a general practitioner (GP) within the Biomedical and Innovation center meant that he often serves as the first line of contact with patients. Nicknamed by his colleagues as the “Private Doc”, Takumi often uses a combination of his keen observation skills and creativity to devise a suitable diagnosis for his patients.

last43

A consultation with Dr. Takumi isn’t likely to be the most comfortable of experiences. Not only do patients have to put up with his outlandish behavior, his somewhat harsh remarks often strike the hearts of his subjects, as evidenced by his conservation with Masuda.

last23

Masuda is a surgeon who broke his arm in a cycling accident and wishes to recover full mobility so that he can once again work at the operating table.
Masuda (M): What’s your specialization?
Takumi (T): I’m a GP.
M: They’re just making up the numbers, huh? There’s a manpower shortage here, that’s why you had to call in the key surgeon from another hospital, isn’t it?
last20
[Takumi takes the subtle insult in his stride.]

last21

T: It’s a really good experience for a doctor to play the patient for once.
M: What do you mean by that?
T: Won’t you be able to visualize your ideal doctor that way? I used to practise privately, and I think it’s important to hear the stories of the patients…
M: [begins to reflect on his own work as a doctor] Previously, I would just excise tumors like they were things to be cut away. I saved countless lives with my own hands. But despite saving their lives, I might not have assured them of the same quality of life after the operation. I never cared about whether I could have used non-surgical methods to cure my patients.
T: You were a terrible doctor, weren’t you?

last30
T: Well, you gotta heal your arm, and also cure yourself of being a terrible doctor, yes?

last32
M: You say pretty harsh things when smiling, you know?

Despite Takumi’s sunny disposition, he’s far from being the goody two shoes everyone would expect. When ophthalmologist Soejima chastises Tachibana and Takumi for taking on a hopeless case, he quotes Nietzsche in an attempt to get them to give up
last47

Takumi is quick to point out that Nietzsche doesn’t work in the same field as he does.
last48

Another incident which brings Takumi’s morals into question comes from episode 2, where the IBRI team asks the director Naruse to purchase a New Generation Operation Simulation Device. Naruse explains that they’ve exceeded their budget for the current year and can’t afford to purchase any more equipment, the surgical department agrees to share their budget with the IBRI team
last55

Takagi brings up the scandalous fact that the head of neurosurgery was having an affair with a doctor from internal medicine department
last56

To which Takumi exclaims, “How about we use the information about the affair and make the department head cooperate with us?”
last57

last58
Soejima: Private Doc, what a vulgar thing to say while smiling!
Takagi: Even I was creeped out by that.

Of course, no analysis of Takumi would be complete without mentioning his obsession with sweets. The 3pm ritual has become a highlight of the drama and the sweets even worked their way into the plot

last12

Clearly, other people don’t enjoy Takumi’s ritual as much as the person himself
last10
last44
last45
last42
This doctor's reaction was hilarious: "Why on earth is he EATING during our conference!?"

last51
Takagi's reaction was cute too, "Weren't you told not to eat during classes?"
Ogiwara: What are you having today?
Takumi: [exclaims proudly] It's a plum jelly made from ripened Kyushu plums!

last52
Takumi: Hang on... This jelly... has got no plums inside!

last53
Takumi: So?

last54
Takagi: May I punch him? Pretty please?

Takumi's acute observation extends to his colleagues as well.
last34
Takumi: There's something going on between you and this patient, isn't there?

And of course, a medical suspense drama wouldn't be complete without angsty Takumi! Enjoy~

He looked like he was wearing color contacts during the last scene, but it could be due to the lighting instead.

It's nice how Takumi reflects certain aspects of Aiba's personality, but yet they're different in some fundamental ways.

Remember when I told you that I did not like actor!Aiba, to the point where I had to stop watching his dramas (yes, even Mikeneko Holmes, even though I adore Matsuko Deluxe like whoa!)? I am actually totally fine with him as Takumi. Enjoying the angsty side of his character. Surprised at myself, really.

(On a random side note: Had a moment of amusement and private joy today when one of the essays I have to review 'forced' me to borrow a very academic book on Japanese pop culture, globalization and transnational law. I knew six years of law school plus postgrad work would eventually lead to this.)

From: [identity profile] barbosa2007.livejournal.com
Actually I'll have to admit that I didn't catch most of Aiba's dramas. He has a habit of clenching his jaw when he's trying to project a serious mood, that leads to an unnatural tension in the face. He's definitely more relaxed in this drama, which I think leads to a more natural acting output.

How does Japanese pop culture, globalization and transnational law relate to each other? Was it written by a Japanese or Western author? Sounds interesting! When I was teaching science in middle school, I found it very cathartic to show students all those A no Arashi experiments and we'd predict what would happen. If only I could do that for every job... XD

Date: 2013-02-02 07:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lilischka.livejournal.com
Japanese author. Actually there are quite a few articles out there on the topic - most of them focus on region-building in East Asia and regional identity. You will now have a new excuse to watch Arashi shows: Facilitating transnational community building regardless of existing and imminent political tensions. So when you showed your students A no Arashi (and I adore you for doing that!) you contributed in a positive way to that process. Kudos to you - and Aiba :D

(If you REALLY want to actually read one of these articles, I could mail you one, since they have restricted institutional access.)

Oh wow, thank you so much for this! I don't understand a thing about it and so can't fully enjoy the drama. Now I know, it's really interesting. Especially the part that Takumi was smiling while saying something harsh.
By the way, how do you call Private Doc in Japanese? Machi-sha?

Uwah, thanks so much for plotting the story out so far. I haven't been able to watch the subbed episode yet, so I'm unclear about what's going on. But there seem to be so many stories woven into the drama, which is the main reason why I'm deeply in love with the drama now ^__^.

Nice report ^_^

I seriously cannot wait for the subbed episodes to come out... The drama will not be really appreciated without fuly understanding everything they say...

And I really love aiba here...

This was a very interesting and helped me understand some parts better :) I definitely think he is doing a good job here. When I see him I don't see Aiba but Takumi Sensei, which didn't happen with Mikeneko, while watching it I was Aiba noo! xD. I'm definitely looking forward to see more Angsty Takumi and the development of characters and their past.

Loved the caps :D And I loved the moment where he got very disappointed on the lack of plums on the desert xD

Haven't watched it yet :D *bad habit to pile up everything*
But from what I heard and read about this drama, looks like this drama is far from what I expect it to be, because I have doubt when he get this character *sorry Aiba XD*

My friends said this drama is better that Calico and said I should watched it. And considering that your summaries is so tempting, maybe I'll tried download the first episode.

Thanks for the review ^^

I love this show! It's difficult to understand because of all the medical jargon - and I've never watched any medical dramas before - but the intrigue pulls you in! I saw its ratings though - is it normal for them to be just barely past the 10% mark? I feel like this show is underrated ;;(

Sorry for the rant ;;P

I think the ratings are considered to be better than average for a Tuesday 9pm drama, but not stellar. There's lots of dramas which are good but didn't get fantastic ratings though. Toda Erika's SPEC is a good example of that. (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Keizoku_2:_SPEC)

You can check out the ratings of previous Tuesday 9pm dramas over here:
